Deer Isle, Maine
Maine is home. Home is always complicated. But Maine is surely about wood. I read recently that Maine is the most densely wooded state in the United States. I'm not sure if that's true, but from what I've seen, it might well be. It's also seafood, of course, and barns and clapboard or cedar shake houses and fields with cows eating actual grass (no corn, please!!!), the organic fruit and veg stands at the side of the road, the blueberry and raspberry bushes in our back yard, the cherry tree by the drive, and the two still young apple trees out by the white pine tree that by all rights ought to fall down tomorrow. But more than any of that, Maine, for me, is just plain home.
